Bivariate Distributions Underlying Responses to Ordinal Variables

چکیده

The association between two ordinal variables can be expressed with a polychoric correlation coefficient. This coefficient is conventionally based on the assumption that responses to are generated by underlying continuous latent bivariate normal distribution. When normality violated, estimated may biased. In such case, we consider other distributions. this paper, aimed provide an illustration of fitting various distributions empirical data and examining how estimates vary under different distributional assumptions. Results suggested skew-normal rarely hold in datasets. contrast, mixtures were often not rejected.

A recommendation for applied researchers to substantiate the claim that ordinal variables are the product of underlying bivariate normal distributions

A simulation study was carried out to study the behaviour of the polychoric correlation coefficient in data not compliant with the assumption of underlying continuous variables. Such data can produce relatively high estimated polychoric correlations (in the order of .62). Applied researchers are prone to accept these artefacts as input for elaborate modelling (e.g., structural equation models) ...

Regression for ordinal variables without underlying continuous variables

Several techniques exist nowadays for continuous (i.e. numerical) data analysis and modeling. However, although part of the information gathered by companies, statistical offices and other institutions is numerical, a large part of it is represented using categorical variables in ordinal or nominal scales. Techniques for model building on categorical data are required to take advantage of such ...

Transition Models for Analyzing Longitudinal Data with Bivariate Mixed Ordinal and Nominal Responses

In many longitudinal studies, nominal and ordinal mixed bivariate responses are measured. In these studies, the aim is to investigate the effects of explanatory variables on these time-related responses. A regression analysis for these types of data must allow for the correlation among responses during the time. To analyze such ordinal-nominal responses, using a proposed weighting approach, an ...

Asymmetric Univariate and Bivariate Laplace and Generalized Laplace Distributions

Alternative specifications of univariate asymmetric Laplace models are described and investigated. A more general mixture model is then introduced. Bivariate extensions of these models are discussed in some detail, with particular emphasis on associated parameter estimation strategies. Multivariate versions of the models are briefly introduced.

Regression Models with Ordinal Variables*

Most discussions of ordinal variables in the sociological literature debate the suitability of linear regression and structural equation methods when some variables are ordinal. Largely ignored in these discussions are methods for ordinal variables that are natural extensions of probit and logit models for dichotomous variables. If ordinal variables are discrete realizations of unmeasured conti...
